How often should you cut your hair if you want it to grow?
If you are dealing with hair breakage, you probably should lessen up on hot tools and have some deeper conditioning occasionally done by a professional or even by yourself.

An adequate trim can help with hair breakage: imagine breaking a pencil and causing all those rough, split edges. It's the same with hair: if the hair is broken, the ends split (hence the word split ends). If you cut the hair regularly, preventing the hair from getting to that split end stage, it's not going to keep splitting all the way out. So, by getting a trim, you can actually help the hair to grow a little bit longer by nourishing the ends and by keeping them cleanly cut, so to speak.
