You'll probably know intuitively if the conversation is flowing, because you won't be wondering "Is it flowing?" But just in case you're still not totally sure, here are some general signs a conversation is flowing on a first date:
  • The conversation feels easy and effortless.
  • Time is flying by.
  • There's a pretty even back-and-forth, and neither of you is dominating the conversation.
  • The atmosphere is comfortable and chill, as opposed to stiff, anxious, or tense.
  • Your date's body language shows they're engaged and having a good time (for instance, they're maintaining eye contact with you, they're smiling, and they're leaning forward.)
  • The things you say build off of one another's responses, indicating mutual interest and attention.

To keep the conversation flowing on a first date, really listen to what the person is telling you and prepare for follow-up questions that you could ask about what they're saying. It'll keep you so much more engaged in the conversation if you're thinking about ways to expand upon what they're saying and ask them to give you more detail.

For example, if someone is talking about their interest in cooking, you can then think about different ways to expand upon that. Ask questions like, "Is there a specific dish that you like to make?" "What's the worst dish you've ever tried making?" "What's the biggest cooking fail you've had?"

I would add that really great conversation happens when you take one topic, and then you go deeper with it. You might say, "Where did you grow up?" And they may say, "I grew up in Detroit." And you might say, "Wow, tell me about Detroit. What was it like growing up in Detroit?"
