How to Decide What Sport to Play
There are many things to take into consideration when choosing a new sport to take up. While our quiz can help you narrow down your options, here are some other things to think about when making your decision:
- How expensive is the sport? How much money are you willing and able to invest in the sport? Keep in mind that some sports may require a lot of money just to get started (like skiing), while others may be more financially accessible to begin (like tennis, which you could play for free at a public court).
- Do you want to play on a team? Some sports—like football or basketball—require every player to be in sync with one another to ensure victory, while others—like tennis or golf—allow for more independence. If you're more of a team player (or want to work on team-building skills), consider a team sport. If you're more of the solo type, try something with more independence.
- What sports are available in your area? Depending on where you live, you may not have easy access to certain sports. For instance, if you're looking for a school sport to join and you live in the city, your school may not be equipped to offer as many field sports. On the other hand, many rural schools lack the number of students necessary to offer large team sports. This doesn't mean you can't start your own league, if you're willing to put in the extra effort.
- How physically demanding do you want your sport to be? Are you looking for something that'll really challenge you on a physical level, like football, or are you looking for something a little more chill, like golf? It may be worth asking yourself how prepared you are currently to compete in a physically demanding sport.
-
How physically aggressive are you prepared to get? Are you looking for a contact sport, like wrestling, or are you interested in something where you're unlikely to come into physical contact with other players, like cross country?
Remember, figuring out which sport to play will probably take a little trial and error, and it's OK if you end up realizing the sport you're playing isn't the right one for you. It's all about exploring, learning a new skill, meeting new people, and moving your body! So don't be afraid to try some out-of-the-ordinary ideas, like roller derby or Quidditch (yes, people play Quidditch IRL), alongside the more traditional sports like baseball or tennis.
If you're willing to try new things and put yourself out there, you'll find the perfect sport for you in no time.
