All About the Musical Wicked
Wicked is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It’s loosely based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, and it essentially serves as a prequel to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The show premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003.
Wicked follows the unlikely friendship that blooms between Elphaba Thropp, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda Upland, who later becomes Glinda the Good Witch, when a mishap makes them roommates at Shiz University. In the original Broadway cast, Idina Menzel played Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth played Glinda.[1]
